Since quiting my radio show I have had time to reflect and realize why they call it a young mans game.  My throat is almost full enough of so much bullshit I am choking on it.  It is hard to write comedy when you are depressed.  It is hard to care when you are depressed.  All you can do it wait it out and hopefully something will happen to motviate me out of this shitfest.

After the release of my third dvd near the end of 2010 I was starting to feel the effects of what to do next.  I have released three dvds in less then six years which is a lot of material when you factor in each has over 90 minutes of standup.  It is just getting harder and harder to try and one up myself so I dont feel like a hack.   In the end if I did a fourth dvd other then braggin rights what is it for?  Contrary to what you may think I am not a fan of bragging rights.

 I am not working that much but I dont think most comics are these days as it is getting harder and harder to survive as a comedian in Canada.  Also which is even tougher is when I have not worked in weeks then I have to headline a show and I am rusty big time.  Most cases it takes three or four shows to shake the rust off to fire on all cylinders so when you have a two show weekend you dont even get started.

What makes it even harder is when you have a middle act that is swinging a big stick and killing with original edgy material.  Last weekend I worked with nick beaton a very funny young comic.  I am not saying that he took the weekend but there were times I felt like I was a fat jake lamotta.  It was great to see a comic work so hard like he does but it also reminds you of your own shortcomings.  I have not written much and have become bloated when it comes to my act. 

 Dance monkey tell them more about material that is four years old and sell it like you thought of it today…dance you fucking monkey.

When I look back at 2011, I think I will see a year of being stuck in the mud with no significant contribution to my comedy and just telling the same 40 minutes of jokes over and over.  Put a fork in my ass flip me over I am done.

I have exactly three months to pull my head out of my ass and write new material for the tour I am doing across Canada with Kenny Robinson and Kathleen Mcgee.

So a lot has happened over the last few weeks.  Lots to scream about but in the end after all the screaming is over who does it really effect?

I quit my XM radio show cause after a year of doing it for free there was too much drama and politics to keep going.  I could spend the day writing it all out so you can see all the juicy details but it is just time to move on.

Whenever i have had a problem in this business it normally stems from me having to stand up for myself or stop someone taking advantage of me.  Due to this i am labelled hard to work with in this business.

Ask around and that is what people will say or one comic once said “no one takes it serious we just roll our eyes and say darren has a problem working with anyone”.

I think over the last year i did more good for comedy then bad.  By doing a show for free where it was the only show in canada that a canadian comic could come on and talk for up to an hour and be heard throughout North Amercia.  Not some morning radio three minute monkey dance bullshit.   Not all morning radio is bad but we all know what I mean.

Why did i do it all for free ..sure people will say you got exposure darren but like once comic said “you will die from exposure in canadian comedy”.

I simpy did it cause i love standup comedy and think that it deserves more respect.

The one thing i learned along time ago is you have to have self respect and integrity before someone will respect you.

Thanks to the 40-50 guests we had.  We made it to the year mark.

In some cases the shows were stronger then ever and especially in vaughn last night i kicked the fuck out of that place…but isnt vaughn a place that needs kicking from time to time

I made a top ten list for comedy dvds for 2010. I beat out ornay adams and aziz ansari.   Notice I am the only one that is a one man army in terms of production.  All the others are either on major labels or large indie record labels.

I have not been able to find much time to blog and to be honest unless there is a big point i want to make or something earth shattering happens why bother? 

To kick of the new year I will be uploading a few new videos per week into my youtube account.  I finally am paying someone to rip my dvds into short files so i can post them.  People have asked why i do this as wont this affect sales of the dvds?  Well yes and no…if you just want to watch a show piece by piece then maybe.  I think someone will be more enticed if they see it first and know what they are getting.  That is why i have always supported downloads on the web.  Now I am saying this as I am not a guy getting ripped off large…perspective is everything.

I turn 40 during January and will be doing a crazy show in OTTAWA to mark it.  I am not 100 percent sure what is going to happen but trust me it will be out there.  Tons of tears and material i dont normaly do or havent done.  I plan on filming it and using it somehow on a bootleg dvd.  I have the show from halloween that is pretty special that will be put with the ottawa show.

If you are in toronto I will be playing the Eton house December 21st.  I will also be giving away a boxed set of all my stuff to one audience member who then can take it to a used dvd store and get 4 bucks for the whole thing.    Included in the package is my 3 full length dvds, my comedy now special, my first cd and a dvd full of episodes of my radio show.  So come out and have fun on a tuesday night in the tdot.

Also look for me coming to your TVs this janaury on a new cartoon called The Adventures Of Chuck and Friends.  It is a big new cartoon that looks amazing and saving my ass financially.  I play rowdy the green garbage truck…see the irony there….like rain on your wedding day.

Well I am pretty rusty to be honest and have not had a series of real shows in months.  The last six months has been very grueling  getting all the stuff together on the new dvd it has really knocked the sails out of me.

Being a one man army gets very very tiring.

This reminds me of when i chose to try and do 25 shows in one week in toronto five years ago…day one i was like WTF was I thinking.  Now another comic has approached me and told me he is going to try and break my record and i am like finally someone can take this noose and run with it.  Good luck

SO Francis is going to Mariane Faithful for guidance…a former junkie who dated rock stars ..seems like the apple hasn’t fallen too far from her mothers tree. I am fan of Mariane Faithful’s work but I don’t want her being a role model. 

Why is it that we as a culture always see celebrities as more then they are.  Like they wrote a few good songs so they must be good people..good parents…yeah like that worked out for john Philips.  All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey..i went down on my daughter on a winters day.

What could Mariane Faithfull possibly tell her that Courtney love hasn’t already lived through.  That’s like the Octomom getting birth control advice from Kate Gosslein. 

But… I suppose… Frances could have made worse choices.  Here’s my Top Eight Role Models Worse Than Marianne Faithful.

1. Mel Gibson: when it comes to bad press…. he can teach her how to role with the punches literally
2. Todd Bridges:   Willis from Different Strokes…from child superstar to crack dealer to the oprah show and finding god….at least he is still alive and a book deal…instant how-to manual
3. Lindsey Lohan: can show her how to do things quickly…how to be.high, sabotage your career and coordinate your wardrobe to match your parole anklet all before you are 25
4. Dr Drew Pinsky of Celebrity Rehab: most famous children end up in rehab anyways so we might as well speed up the process
5. Tiger woods: she is young and rich… why get married and lose half your stuff ….Tiger can teach her to play the field
6. Snookie: she can teach her how to take a punch and still be a classy lady
7. OJ Simpson: if Francis ever ends up in the joint OJ is the man and also if Francis  needs to leave a party quick, Oj can show her some traffic shortcuts through LA to get home.
8. Joan Rivers: can show her even if a loved one commits suicide you can hide the years of pain through plastic surgery.

Look the girl is 19 now and I don’t think finding someone to mentor her is the answer.  Go have experiences with many people.  Travel ..see the world though your own eyes. 

And please on behalf of all of us that are tired of young people who get press based on fame and lack of talent (cough) The Situation…(cough) Paris Hilton….try to stay out of the papers.   Your family kinda has a history of not being able to handle that kind of pressure.
